Every family has a keeper. 

You know, the person who remembers everyone’s birthday without needing the reminder for it. Or the one that remembers every detail of that summer that no one talks about anymore.

The best part about these people is that they seem to remember everything. They know where all the old photo albums are. Not only that, but they can give you the story behind each picture.

“This was your great-grandmother Lily. She made the best pot roast, but didn’t speak to her sister because she thought she stole the family recipe. Luckily, they made up at the end!”

The stories a keeper could tell from a photo are worth gold. To everyone in the family, you’re just seeing a picture.

But to the keeper, a single photo is a whole world.

The Work No One Sees

Keeping track of memories down to the tiniest detail is definitely not a walk in the park.

To remember these things, our relatives used to label the pictures, keep the recipes, or save mementos.

The most interesting part is that all of this work usually falls on a single person. It’s usually someone who cared the most. Someone who stayed close to the details while everyone else assumed the details would always be there.

In other words, that’s the keeper, holding the family’s archives for years in silence.

And because they carry it so naturally, we sometimes forget they are carrying it at all.

What Disappears With Them

Sadly, the keeper won’t always be around. For you, they may have departed a long time ago.

Yes, the photos and all the keepsakes are still there, but what about the context? Who will tell all the stories about their voices, special nicknames, or that one wedding moment that no one seems to remember but them?

In a way, this feels like you’re losing a whole chunk of yourself.

And the worst part? Most families realize this when it’s too late.

Don’t Wait While It’s Too Late

As your children grow up, they will become more and more curious about the past lives of their relatives. Naturally, they assume that the information will always be there since someone in the family knows it. And that someone is usually the keeper.

Unfortunately, there will come a day when the keeper is no longer there. And in that moment, the whole family will realize the world that lived in the keeper.

So, if you’re lucky enough and the keeper is still around, don’t wait to ask.

Ask who is in the old photos. Ask what their parents were like. Ask what family story they hope does not get lost. Ask what recipe they know by heart. Ask what they wish someone had asked them sooner.

Most importantly, don’t make a whole project out of it or consider it as taking over their role. 

Instead, help them out so they don’t carry that whole lore by themselves.

But you don’t have to be the only one knowing them.

Start passing it on while you can. Tell the stories. Label the photos. Record your voice. Invite someone younger to sit with you and ask.
